What is an IP Address?

The Internet Protocol (IP) rules govern the data format sent over the internet or inside a local network. An IP address, or unique address, identifies a device on the internet or a local network. IP addresses, in essence, are the identifiers that allow data to be transmitted between devices on a network: they contain location information and make devices reachable for communication. The internet needs a way to identify between different computers, routers, and webpages. IP addresses are an essential part of how the internet works and provide a way to do so, this post will guide you further to see what is my(your) IP address or want to know your IP address complete details.

What is meant by IP?

An IP address is made up of a series of integers separated by periods. IP addresses are made up of four integers; an example address is 192.158.1.38. The set's numbers can vary from 0 to 255. As a result, the entire IP addressing range is 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255. IP addresses are not generated at random. They are created and assigned by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), part of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers.ICANN is a non-profit organization based in the United States founded in 1998 to help maintain the internet secure and accessible to everyone.

How do IP Addresses work?

Internet Protocol operates in the same manner that any other language does by following a set of rules to convey information. All devices use this protocol to find, send, and share data with other connected devices. Any computer in any area can communicate with one another if they speak the same language.

Types of IP Addresses-

Different types of IP Addresses are operated all over the world. Some of them are-

  1. Consumer IP Address-

Every company with an internet service plan will have two IP addresses: private IP addresses and public IP addresses. A personal IP address is used within a network, whereas a public IP address is used outside one.

2. Private IP Address:

Any device that connects to your internet network is given a private IP address. The number of personal IP addresses you have at home is likely to increase as the internet of things grows. Your router should detect all of these items separately, and many items need a way to identify one another. As a result, your router generates private IP addresses for each device, which serve as unique identifiers on the network.

3. Public IP Address:

The primary address associated with your whole network is a public IP address. While each connected device has its IP address, they are all part of your network's primary IP address. ISPs typically have a big pool of IP addresses from which to assign addresses to their clients. A public IP address is an address that will be used to identify your network by all devices outside of your internet network.

There are two types of public IP addresses-

  1. Dynamic IP Address: Dynamic IP addresses are changed regularly. ISPs purchase a vast pool of IP addresses and assign them to their clients automatically. They re-assign them regularly, and the older IP numbers are returned to the pool for other clients. The rationale behind this strategy is to save costs for the ISP.

  1. Static IP Address: Static IP addresses, unlike dynamic IP addresses, do not change. An IP address, or unique address, identifies a device on the internet or a local network. Once the network assigns an IP address, it does not change. Static IP addresses provide a consistent IP address for websites and email addresses linked with them, which is necessary if you want other devices to reach them on the internet regularly.

How to know your IP address?

The most straightforward way to determine your router's public IP address is to Google "What is my IP address?" The result will be displayed at the top of the page by Google. Other websites can see your public IP address because your router requested and released the information by visiting the site.

But finding your private IP Address can vary by platform-

For Windows-

  1. Use the command prompt to get started.
  2. Using Windows search, look for "cmd" (without the quotations).
  3. To find the information, type "ipconfig" (without the quotes) in the pop-up box that appears.

For Mac-

  1. Select System Preferences from the drop-down menu.
  2. Select the network, and the data should appear.

You can go inside the router to check the IP addresses of other devices on your network. The brand and software used by the router determine how you access it. In most cases, you should access the router by typing its gateway IP address into a web browser on the same network. From there, go to "attached devices," which should show you a list of all the devices that are currently or recently connected to the network, along with their IP addresses.
