What is computer | Components of computer
Introduction to Computer
In the early 19th century there was a man named
Charles Babbage who was an English mechanical engineer and polymath expert
designed the first programmable machine the form of a computer we see now. The
name computer comes from the Latin language “computer”, this means to
calculate or programmable machine. Right now we are living in a world where one
can’t imagine a life without the computer, all of the world matters runs
through it, you are reading this material on a device which is also a computer,
our banking systems, complex machines, and all the advances of technology we
are cherishing in the current era are due to computers and its related
technology. Here are some advantages of computer programs and uses of computer programs.
Summarized definition of computer
A computer is an electronic device for storing
and processing data, typically in binary form, according to instructions given
to it in a variable program. It has the ability to store, retrieve and process
data.
Components of a computer
There are two major components of a computer system:
- hardware
- software
Each of these components is necessary in order to enable
meaningful productivity. If installed separately, each may be useful to an
extent but incapable of achieving complete computing potential. Hardware and
software need the human factor in order to make input and connectivity possible.
Hardware of Computer
It includes devices Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse, Hard Disk drive, Ram, Motherboard, CPU,
- Monitor the term "monitor" is often used synonymously with "computer screen" or "display." The monitor displays the computer's user interface and open programs, allowing the user to interact with the computer.
- Keyboard is the piece of computer hardware used to input text, characters, and other commands into a computer or similar device.
- The mouse is a small handheld input device that controls a computer screen's cursor or pointer in conjunction with the way it is moved on a flat surface. The mouse term name originates from its likeness to a small, corded and elliptical shaped device that looks like a mouse tail.
- The hard disk drive is a non-volatile memory hardware device that permanently stores and retrieves data on a computer. A hard drive is a secondary storage device that consists of one or more platters to which data is written using a magnetic head, all inside of an air-sealed casing.
- Ram is a computer memory on which data can be both read and written and on which the location of data does not affect the speed of its retrieval.
- The motherboard is a computer’s central communications backbone connectivity point, through which all components and external peripherals connect.
- CPU is the component of a computer system that performs the basic operations (such as processing data) of the system, that exchanges data with the system's memory or peripherals, and that manages the system's other components. It is the main chip which controls all the functions; it is also known as the processor and can be called as brain of the computer.
Computer software (Software)
Computer software, or simply software, is a collection of
data or computer instructions that tell the computer how to work. The computer
software is necessary to run the hardware, without the programming or commands
installed in the hardware they are nothing but a piece of junk. These commands
are installed through the software. I am going to discuss some of the examples
of computer software here. Follow the link to download free software for your PC or tablet or for your mobile.
- System Software
- Application Software
- System Software is the most basic type of software in any computer system, which is essential for other programs, applications and indeed for the whole computer system to function. Microsoft Windows XP, Mac OS, Linux, Windows Vista, Ubuntu, and device drivers.
- Application Software is the kind of software that is solely used to facilitate ourselves or we can say to enhance our overall experience. These are not necessary he/she install it only with his/her will. A computer system can run perfectly fine without installing this software, unlike the system software which is absolutely necessary. Application software examples include MS Office, Open Office, Media Players, MS Access, educational software, media development software, Antivirus software.
